Overview

Solio Ranch also known as Solio Game Reserve is a privately owned wildlife conservancy, 180km (111miles) from Nairobi approx. 3 hours by car and 46.7 km (29miles) from Mount Kenya National Park, and 22km north of Nyeri Town.  The reserve is accessible by either charter flight to the private airstrip 10mins from Solio Lodge, or a scheduled domestic flight from Nairobi to Nanyuki airstrip 41 min (36.8 km or 22.8miles).

The reserve is fenced as it’s an area geared towards rhino conservation, a major part of the breeding of black rhinos in Kenya. Founded in 1970 as one of the finest wildlife parks in Africa not yet figured on the tourist map for long. A large section of the Solio cattle ranch is fenced-off land dedicated to conservation.

The rhino is a member of the ‘Big Five, a key tourist attraction, other wildlife include the Buffalo, Zebra, Giraffe, and plains game such as Eland, Oryx, Impala, Waterbuck, Thompson’s gazelle, and Warthog, lion, leopard, cheetah. End of 2009, Kenya’s rhino population had 635 black rhinos and 353 white rhinos in various conservation areas around the country.

A physically diverse, scenically spectacular, open grasslands and wooded ravines. The only luxury lodge on the game reserve, in 19,000 acres of conservancy surrounded by a 45,000-acre ranch.  The rhinos are looked after by a team of dedicated rangers who protect them from poachers 24 hours a day.

More than 350 species of Birdlife include Black-winged Lapwing, Butt-Crested Bustard, Crowned Hornbill, Grey Crowned Crane, and Hildebrandt’s Starling. As a result of the high altitude the reserve is on, there is little to no malaria in Solio Ranch. However, whilst visiting other places in Kenya you should consider taking antimalarial.
