Overview:
Nyerere National Park covers an area of over 30,000 square kms (11,298 sq mi), the largest national park in Tanzania, and one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in the world. Just south of Dar es Salaam, covering most of Liwale District in the western Lindi Region, south west Pwani region, north eastern Ruvuma Region and a large part of south eastern Morogoro Region.
The park, recently established in the year 2019 by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), previously known as Selous Game Reserve, now named in honor of the founding father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere of independent Tanganyika then, now the state of Tanzania. With the largest relatively undisturbed ecological and biological processes including a diverse range of wildlife with significant predator and prey relationship.
The Rufiji River lies entirely within Tanzania, as the largest and longest river in the country, with many tributaries, streams and small lakes are an invaluable life force for wildlife and its population of hippo and rhinos. The river has been designated a photographic zone and a popular tourist destination where the river’s delta contains the largest mangrove forest in eastern Africa.
Visitors to the park enjoy a wide diversity of activities such as land-based game drives, guided walking safaris, water-based trips and fly camping makes this a great value in a truly remote wilderness area. The wildlife habitats include open grasslands, Miombo woodlands, lakes swamps and riverine forests. With over 440 bird species recorded including the rare pel’s fishing owl and white backed heron making this an ideal location for any ornithophile.
Nyerere is also home to a large population of hippos, giraffes, the Big 5 namely; elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, lions and leopards and the last true stronghold for African wild dog amidst the staggering 2,100 plant species. The park is accessible on regular charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro & Arusha, or by road form Dar es Salaam an approx. 5hr (174mi) drive. Best times to visit is during the dry season from June to October.
