Singita Grumeti Game Reserve
Location: adjacent to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Area: 350,000 acres
Overview
In 1994 the Tanzania government created the Singita Grumeti Game Reserve to protect the path of the annual wildebeest migration and the indigenous biodiversity of this vast ecosystem. 2022 the Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fund (The Grumeti Fund) a not-for-profit organization was granted the right to manage and conserve the 350,000 acres for the benefit of Tanzania, Africa, and the World.
Singita took over the management of the property to enhance low-impact, luxury tourism four years later at the request of the concessionaire. Ensuring the continued protection of the Singita Serengeti concessions, primarily situated in the critical western corridor of the plains, is essential to the future sustainability of the ancient migration that defines these lands.
The non-profit Grumeti Fund carries out wildlife conservation and community development programs in and around the Singita Grumeti Reserve to mention a few projects local and sustainable foods, Serengeti Girls Run 2022 an exclusive, purpose-driven event forming part of Singita and the Grumeti Fund’s Safaris with a Purpose and raise funds for empowerment programs for girls, including the provision of sanitary pads for one year and education scholarships.
The Serengeti plains teem with wildlife, including vast herds of plains game, a plethora of predators, and the spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. In 2003 when the management took over, they were faced with the challenges of uncontrollable illegal hunting, rampant wildfires, and spreading strands of invasive alien vegetation.
As such the Fund dedicates to resorting this once barren and highly degraded region into a flourishing wilderness. Its success is seen in the recovery of many species including buffalo, wildebeest, and elephant populations, and in 2019, the Fund carried out the largest single relocation and reintroduction of 9 critically endangered Eastern Black Rhino.
Funds are derived from Singita guests, NGOs, and philanthropists seeking to make a lasting contribution to the sustainability of conservation work in Africa. One Planet was founded as a charity and social enterprise London – based consultancy that reviews and advises the Reserve on the sustainability journey and helps to ensure Singita is recognized as a global leader.
This is home to five distinct properties (plus an exclusive private villa option) accessible by road from Karatu approx. 5 hrs. 52min (301.4km/ 187.2 miles) and by air from Arusha or Kilimanjaro daily approx. 2 hrs. 15min alternative is charter flights.
