Katavi National Park
Location: Kigoma District, Kigoma Region, Tanzania
Area: 4,470km2
Overview
Katavi National Park A remote area of mountain ranges providing a backdrop to the low-lying seasonal lakes (Katisunga, Chada, and Katavi), each one encircled by evocative palms and scrub. The third largest park in Tanzania, with a landscape dominated by 3 large floodplains strung together by the Katuma River boasts of the largest population of hippos, and crocodiles and provides a habitat for an abundance of water birds.
Located in the Katavi region, Tanzania, this extremely remote park was created in 1974, less frequented by visitors compared to other Tanzania parks. With an area of approximately 4,471 km2 (1,726 sq. mi), Katavi National Park, in the Rukwa Rift was extended to its existing size of 4,470km2 in 1998 and has similar wildlife to Ruaha, with an enviable selection of antelope including Topi, Roan and Sable often found in large herds.
The Katuma River supports a refreshing belt of green, winding through the landscapes, and providing contrast to the drier areas around. The savannah plains fill with herds during the daytime and an impressive selection of predators wait patiently in the woodland towards sunset. The predators include maned lions, leopards, and hunting dogs.
The greater area has recorded 373 species of bird life, seeing the green season welcome additional migratory species. A 3 ½ hr. flight from Dar es Salaam to Katavi and a 2 hr. flight to Mwanza on a light aircraft.
