Eastern Serengeti
Location: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Overview:
Eastern Serengeti: The southeastern plains are dotted with several clusters of kopjes which form a microhabitat inhabited by non-plains wildlife such as rock hyrax, klipspringer, leopard, and various cliff-nesting raptors. The kopjes are used by lions for shelter, vantage points to enable them survey the surrounding plains. Simba Koppies are between Seronera and the Ngorongoro Crater Area with good sightings of lions whilst the grasslands around the more easternly Gol Koppies has excellent sightings of both lions and cheetahs.
This region is one of the most beautiful in the park, the high land valleys, mountains, sweeping grassy plains which are abundant in the green season, dotted with granite outcrops that sliced through the meandering rivers. Though more remote than other areas in the park, it’s perfect for off the beaten track adventures, teeming wildlife all year-round.
Wildlife density increases between December and April, as giant herds of wildebeest and zebra surface for the seasonal rains, and wildlife is great around Lake Ndutu in the heart of the wildebeest gathering. Birthing of wildebeest occurs during this period as one of the highlights of the Great Migration, attracting a magnet of predators.
The vachellia woodlands surrounding the lake provides a range of bird species not found anywhere else in the Serengeti, you may spot a Fischer’s lovebird if you are alert. The quiet season is between April and November for visitors, whilst the wildlife remains abundant as the southeastern plains dry out, turning the landscape into a thinly vegetated area but get the support from the two lakes, with scores of wildlife, namely Masek Lake in Ngorongoro Crater Ara and the seasonal Ndutu Lake.
