Segera Conservancy
Location: Foothill of Mount Kenya, Laikipia County, Kenya
Area: 50 000 acre
Overview
Segera has returned to a working cattle ranch by dropping fences, sharing information, and opening migration corridors into a thriving wildlife conservation area. Set within the heart of the Laikipia Plateau is this spectacular diverse area, with the second highest wildlife density, located between the western Great Rift Valley and southeastern Mount Kenya.
The region forms part of the 56,000sq.km Ewaso Eco-system and is comparable to that of the Maasai Mara and supports the endangered Patas Monkey, African Wild Dog, 40% of the world’s remaining Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, and Reticulated Giraffe, good density of lions, Leopards, Cheetah’s, Spotted Hyenas, Elephants, Buffalos, Elands, and more than 365 bird species.
The grasslands and woodlands are fertile and nourished by the waters that flow from the Aberdare Mountains to the Segera, Mutara, Ewaso Nyiro, and Suguroi Rivers. These water sources are common drinking spots for warthogs and other plains game.
In 2005, Jochen Zeitz bought the land and took the steps to restore the natural eco-systems, with the mission of conservancy known as the “4C concept – Community, Commerce, Culture and Conservation”, part of southern Africa’s Wilderness Safaris model that embraces the diverse needs of people, animals, land, and guides management practices to ensure the preservation of all four.
The conservancy today supports solar energy facilities, education centers, freshwater programs, and the Zeitz Foundation established in 2009. In 2013, the ultra-luxurious Segera Retreat was opened. Conservationist Jochen has created an exclusive destination for, adventure, spiritual reflection, and peace. Here, you get exceptional privacy in midst of absolute luxury, bespoke service, and generous all-inclusive offerings combined in your home-away-from-home environment.
