Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary

Overview

The sanctuary borders both Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloidien only a 1½-hour drive away. Created in the mid-1990s with the sole purpose of giving the resident wildlife a place of safety and refuge. On over 18,000 acres surrounded by an electrified fence to keep illegal cattle grazers out and wildlife from straying into the nearby farmlands.

The Sanctuary was established in 1995 by Hans Zwager – a Dutchman, his wife June and their son Peter with an aim of conserving biodiversity, attracting visitors, and becoming the center for sustainable development. The Zwagers had built their home [the Djinn Palace] at Oserian, on the shore of Lake Naivasha, where they became the largest flower growers in Kenya.

The wildlife is able to move freely between the neighbouring Hell’s Gate National Park, the sanctuary, and the lakeshore by way of wildlife corridors to enable constant movement throughout the localized ecosystem, specific species such as leopard and giraffe were persecuted by villages in the past has been stabilized and increased sustainable levels.

Lions do occasionally visit, however, George the lion is a full-time resident for more than 5 years, enhancing the need to “predator-proof” the fence surrounding the Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary. This will allow natural control of the ever-increasing number of certain herbivore species within the sanctuary.

The corridor has over 50 mammal species, including Leopard, Topi, Grevy’s Zebra, Impala, Serval Cat, Warthog, and Lesser Galago. Many migratory birds use Naivasha as the main stop and a huge role in hosting the breeding grounds for numerous species.

There are over 400 species of birds that thrive in the different ecosystems that are part of Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary with common sightings of Klaas’s Cuckoo, Long-crested Eagle, Spectacled Weaver, and Black-backed Puff back.
