Hippo – Point Conservancy
Location: between Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloidien, Nakuru County, Kenya
Area: 600 acre
Overview
Located on a spit between the western shore of Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloidien in the Great Rift Valley, approx. 2 hr. 33 min (117.8 km/73.2 miles) from Nairobi, on a private and secluded 600-acre family-owned estate, on a peninsula between Lake Naivasha and Oloidien at an altitude of 6,200 feet with wonderful climate any time of the year.
With a near-perfect microclimate, over 350 species of birds, and an average of 1,200 resident animals roaming the ground, this conservancy is ideal for birders since it offers roughly four different biospheres within the conservancy itself as well as a number of important birding areas within striking distance. The greater Naivasha area is home to at least 350 regular bird species as well as a host of migrants and irregular visitors.
At 1880 meters above sea level, Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley Lake. It is the second largest freshwater lake in Kenya, and one of the only two freshwater lakes in Rift Valley. The adjacent Lake Oloidien, formerly part of Lake Naivasha, is now separated from its southwest shore by a stretch of the elevated land location of Dodo’s Tower and the Farm.
The meaning of Lake Oloiden is “salty” in the Maa language, and is also accessible by air private charter flight from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha Oserian airstrip – needs prior arrangement with Hippo-Point Management.
