Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was created in 1991, covering an area of 33.9 km², located in southwest Uganda, Mgahinga sits high in the clouds at an altitude of 2,227m and 4,127m, an icon of Uganda’s national parks. The park commands majestic natural beauty, open all year round and renown for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, mountain hiking and birdwatching to mention a few.
The park has 3 Virunga volcanoes namely Mount Muhabura at 4,127m, Mount Gahinga at 3,474 m from where the park’s name is derived and Mount Sabyinyo at 3,645 m. As an important habitat for the remaining mountain gorillas in the world, yet the smallest national park in Uganda, lies close to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest another home to the mountain gorillas.
Mgahinga Park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area which includes adjacent parks in Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. It is bordered to the south the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda, west by the Virunga National Park of DRC Congo and the slopes have a variety of ecosystem, biologically diverse with peaks providing a striking backdrop of the gorgeous scenery.
The park has one habituated gorilla group who wonder through the volcanic watershed into neighbouring Rwanda weeks at a time or a year, though the group has been in Uganda for the past 3 years. The slopes of Mgahinga harbour a rich biodiversity and guided forest walks can be organized.
