Kidepo Valley National Park

 Location: Karenga in Kaabong District, Uganda 

Kidepo Valley National Park was established in 1962, and lies in the rugged, semi-arid valleys between Uganda’s border with South Sudan in north west. It covers an area of 1,442 km2 regarded as the most isolated national park, it is regarded the most magnificent and amongst the finest wilderness in Africa.

Kidepo is rugged savannah, dominated by 2,750 m (9,020 ft) Mount Morungole and transected by the Kidepo and Narus rivers which disappear in the dry season, leaving pools for the wildlife. The Apoka in the heart of the park is savannah landscape which extends far beyond the gazette area. The only permanent water in the park is found in the wetlands and remnant pools in the broad Narus Valley near Apoka.

The seasonal oases is combined with open savannah terrain that make the Narus Valley the park’s prime game viewing location especially with its dense population of lion, buffaloes, elephants, and over 77 mammal species. The Rothschild giraffe are very notable breeding more than 50 individuals from the bottleneck of the mid-1990s. 

Over 476 bird species have been recorded with the common ostrich, secretary bird, northern carmine bee eater, little green bee eater, Abyssinian scimitarbill and many more colorful species. The communities around the park include the pastoral Karamojong, similar to the Maasai in Kenya and IK who are hunters and gatherers and their survival is threatened.
