Bwindi Accommodation

 Location:  South-western Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located south-west in Uganda, Kisoro at the junction of the plain and mountain forests. The park covers 32,092 ha, and 1,160 m-2,607 m above sea level and one of the largest areas in East Africa with Afromontane lowland forest extending well within the montane forest belt. It was established in 1991 largely to protect the tree species over 200 including endemics, some 104 species of ferns, and most important forest in Africa for montane forest butterflies with 202 species which 84% of the country’s total including 8 Albertine endemics.

Bwindi Impenetrable hillsides are covered by one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rain forests which date back over 25,000 years and contains almost 400 species of plants, protects an estimated 459 habituated mount gorilla groups which can be tracked. The Mubare gorilla group became the first available for tourism in Uganda 1993. 9 groups are now habituated for tourism, where one group for research spreads over a series of steep ridges and valleys, and Bwindi has 5 major rivers which flow into Lake Edward.

This diverse region provides shelter to 120 mammals, several primate species like baboon’s, chimpanzees, elephants and antelopes. Over 350 species of birds live in this forest, at least 200 butterfly species including the 8 Albertine Rift endemics and many reptiles. Opportunities abound to discover the local Bakiga and Batwa Pygmy cultures through performances, village walks and workshops.
