Southern Serengeti Accommodation

Location: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Overview

The Southern Serengeti is a seasonal region, during the dry month of May to October the plains are parched and not much is left to graze, sending the herds away from this area. Most of this area lies outside the national park, where the lodges and camps permit off-road driving not allowed within the parks.

The terrain of grassy plains studded with granite kopjes extending endlessly across the scenic beauty of southern Serengeti, which stretches from the bottom of Central Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Maswa Game Reserve. A great area to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration between December and May where huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle come to calf, before the dry season making their way northwards in search of green grass.

Thousands of wildebeest calves take their first steps in the month of February, making this a good month to see thousands of calves take their first steps, and being targeted by predators such as lions, cheetah and hyenas.

Over 500 species of birds have been recorded in Serengeti making this an excelling destination for avid birders with the most common birds like Fischer’s Lovebird, Superb Starling and Cordon-Bleus. Some iconic species, such as the Kori bustard, ostrich and African Fish Eagle may also be seen.
