Western Serengeti Corridor Accommodation

Location:  Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Overview:

Serengeti West also known as the Western Corridor, is a stretch of land that continues to develop from Serengeti Central along the Grumeti River for about 100 kms outwards to Lake Victoria. The area is remote, with few visitors yet famed for the thrilling river crossing at Grumeti River during the Great Migration between the months of May and July annually.

The dominant geographical features of the Western Corridor are the pair of rivers – Grumeti and Mbalageti which run more or less parallel in a westerly direction with 20km apart. This Corridor is a huge valley bordered by hills to that wind up in Lake Victoria, and comprises of open savannah dotted with acacias and a number of giraffes, wildebeest, elephants, zebra, and other plain game, the woodlands, flood plains, and riverine forest, home to Impala, topi, reedbuck, waterbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, roan antelope and buffalo.

The rivers are home to hippos and giant Nile crocodiles, alongside predators such as lions, cheetah, hyenas may be seen as they target to feast on wildebeest especially during the crossing. The park lies in one of the world’s endemic Bird areas, where a quarter of the over 500 bird species found in Serengeti are migratory birds, and include 34 raptors, 6 vultures and aggregations of over 20,000 waterbirds.

The Grumeti River is the first enormous obstacle for the herds to tackle and it may be least known as compared to its northern counterpart, the crossing of the Mara River, yet offers sightings just as exhilarating with added benefits of fewer visitors at the crossing. Wildlife viewing is consistent all year round, and the grasslands north of the river is great for cheetah sightings. Serengeti Hot air-balloon safaris are during the Great Migration season beginning June to end of October and a number of mobile camps operate during this season.
