Grumeti Game Reserve
Location: Grumeti Game Reserve, Tanzania
Overview:
Located in a remote and beautiful corner of Serengeti National Park with few lodges and seldom see other safari vehicles, which makes this the best-kept secret. Accessible by air from Arusha airport on scheduled flights or chartered plane to the Sasakwa airstrip located within the Singita Grumeti Reserve.
The Reserve was created in 1994 by the Tanzanian government with the aim of protecting the annual wildebeest migration route within the 350,000 acres of land. In 2002, the right to manage the conservancy, was then granted to Grumeti Community and Wildlife Conservation Fun (Grumeti Fund). The Conservancy is known for the large pride of lions, and one of the few locations that offer guided walking safari.
Being outside the Park boundaries, your driver guide is not bound by park rules and has more freedom to operate in wide range safari activities, here you can experience both night and day game drives and viewing is excellent throughout the year.
The less visited open grasslands in the north of the Grumeti River is a great sighting area for cheetahs, whilst the broken savannah south of the Grumeti River is resident to populations of giraffe, elephant, wildebeest, zebra and lion. Further into the Riverine Forest are the primate species of black and white colobus monkeys, a number of hippos, crocodiles and bird species.
The most dramatic scene across the Grumeti River is the annual Great Migration which occurs July, a real feast for the population of outsized crocodiles.
