The Republic of Rwanda became an independent nation on 1st July 1962, after separation from Burundi, and landlocked in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa where the African Great Lakes region and Southeast Africa converge.
Located a few degrees south of the Equator, Rwanda borders Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda is a densely populated with 13.46 million as per the last censors in 2021, and most of the people live in rural areas.
The official languages spoken include Kinyarwanda, French, English and Swahili, and the currency is Rwandan Franc. Rwanda is mountainous, with grassy uplands, steep hills and deep valleys and known as the land of a thousand hills. The stunning scenery and warm friendly people offer unique experiences in this remarkable country, blessed with extraordinary biodiversity, incredible wildlife living around its volcanoes, montane rainforest and sweeping plains.
The west of Rwanda forms a branch of the Great Rift Valley known as the Albertine Rift. With 5 endemic species including endangered mountain gorillas at Volcanoes National Park, the golden monkey’s endemic to Virunga Mountains, the red colobus monkey found in Nyungwe Forest National Park, Abbot’s Duiker and endemic subspecies found only in the highlands of Rwanda and the Rwenzori Turaco found in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
As guardian of many iconic species, Rwanda is committed to Responsible Tourism within the four National Parks, and constantly working to ensure life is in sustainable harmony with the environment, with a clean and green mindset. Rwanda banned plastic bags in 2008, and the land is the cleanest in Africa as a result of community effort.
Partnership with local communities to change lives for the better, sees a 10% of the income derived from gorilla, safari, and other tourist permits and park entrance fees.
The road network is excellent and links the core areas to explore this beautiful country. Visitors are rest assured the country is safe as Rwanda was ranked the 9th safest country in the world by the World Economic Forum. Rwandans are respectful, thoughtful and committed to the idea of progress from grass root level to the top. Creativity is celebrated here in dance, unique architecture or works of art.
