 Kigali City the capital of Rwanda covers an area of 730 km², with current metro area population in 2023 of 1,248,000, a 3,31% increase from 2022.

It is located in the centre of the country on the Ruganwa River, and was a trading centre after 1895 during the German colonial administration and later became a regional centre during the Belgian colonial period of 1919- 1962 when Rwanda got independence in 1962.

Its sprawling numerous hills, ridges and valleys with vibrant restaurants and nightlife scene. The Kigali Genocide Memorial documents the 1994 mass killings in Rwanda, associated with the country’s civil war.  Kigali’s annual average high temperature of 27oC and average low temperature of 16oC. 

The city is made up of 3 districts namely Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. The largest geographically is Gasabo, followed by Kicukiro and Nyarugenge.

The districts are divided into 35 administrative sectors which in turn are divided into 161 Cells. The villages make up 1,155 in number, and is the smallest administrative unit. The Northern Province districts of Gicumbi and Rulindo border the city, Bugesera and Rwamagana districts of Eastern Province and the southern province of Kamonyi District. The city is accessible by air from Kigali International Airport a 7 min drive (1.8 mi) to the city centre.

A new international airport in Bugesera to serve Kigali is under construction, it’s an approx. 59 min drive (28.1 min) east of the city. The city has since grown rapidly and is amongst the fastest growing cities in Africa. A visit to the city’s Caplaki Craft Village Ltd stalls, where traditional handicrafts including woodcarving and woven baskets. In terms of religion, Christianity is the largest religion in Rwanda with 43.7% Catholic.
