Akagera National Park was 1st gazetted in 1934, and is one of the oldest national parks in Africa, covering an area of 1,122 km2 (433 sq mi) in a protected wetland in eastern Rwanda and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species. Akagera comprises a spectacular open expanse of wilderness, wetlands and lakes, a third of the 1,200 km² of the park is dominated by water which makes it the largest protected wetland in eastern central Africa.
Considered to be one of the most scenic parks in central-eastern Africa, with an extraordinary biodiversity from impressive herds of herbivores that graze the open plains to the rare and elusive birds that frequent the swamps. The largely open expanse is ideally where all the game viewing action happens, steps are taken to ensure the Big Five roam the park in greater numbers with time.
Since 2010, poaching has been cut to an all time low, with the introduction of a helicopter, a canine unit and rhino trackers. The reintroduction of the lion and rhino gives a boast to the thriving wildlife population including elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and leopards while the waterways teem with hippo and enormous Nile crocodiles. Birders can observe over 482 endemic bird species
Like papyrus gonolek and red-faced barbet.
Visitors may also encounter lesser galago (bushbaby) and greater, baboons, vervet monkeys, olive baboon, blue monkey, and antelopes. The park is accessible by road from Kigali a 2 hr 12 min drive (60.3 mi) and by helicopter from Kigali just 22 mins flight.
