Olare Motorogi Conservancy Accommodation

Location: Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Narok County, Kenya

Area: 35,000 acre

Overview

The formation of Olare Orok Conservancy bordering the Maasai Mara Reserve was landmarked on May 2006 for conservation, a deal brokered with 277 Maasai Landowners, each holding a freehold title deed for their parcel of land within the conservancy. This has since become the template for the Mara Community Wildlife conservancies, and a blueprint for the sustainability of the greater Maasai Mara eco-system.

The Conservancy now expanded to also encompass Motorogi lands, creating Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Prior to 2006, the Olare Orok and Motorogi Conservancies’ 35,000 acres of prime lands, riverine forest, and Acacia woodlands were populated by rural homesteads and grazed in an uncontrolled manner by large herds of cattle, sheep, and goats.

The ecosystem was over-grazed and the sustainability of the habitat for both people and wildlife was being destroyed, several meetings with the local Maasai paid off as they agreed that a new community conservation vision should be sought to address land sustainability and value add in both income and conserving vegetation.

To create a win-win situation for both the Maasai landowners and the Wildlife of the Maasai ecosystem, a combination of wildlife tourism and sustainable rotational grazing would be instilled. Forming a partnership with five tourism operators with the goal of running the conservancy as a premium destination offering private and exclusive experiences to visitors.

Tourism in the Conservancy is limited to a maximum of 94 beds in five light-footprint camps, equating to a ratio of one game-viewing vehicle for every 2,100 acres, as a result, the Conservancy has once again become a haven for big cats, and part of the annual wildebeest migration route.

Accessible by air at Olare Orok airstrip, which is the conservancy’s own bush airstrip for both private and scheduled flights from Wilson Airport Nairobi, and by road a 5 hr. 36 min (265.9 km/ 165 miles) from Nairobi. The Conservancy employs 23 community rangers giving valuable wildlife management and community leadership experience to an efficient conservancy administration team.
