Overview:
Located in the Central Highlands, Nyeri Town lies elevated 5,579 feet inhabited by the Kikuyu people, once the centre of Mau Mau activities in 1950s. Nyeri town was the central administrative headquarters of the country’s former Central Province. The town is situated about 2 hr 45 mins (93.7 mi) north pf Kenya’s capital Nairobi, in a densely populated and fertile central highlands lying between the eastern base of the Aberdares (Nyandarua) range, which forms part of the eastern end of the Great Rift Valley, and the western slopes of Mount Kenya.
Nyeri hosts the tomb of Robert Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, and the home town of the late Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai.
Farming is a major industry here, with tourism as the other significant industry. The destinations nearby include the Aberdare and Mount Kenya National Parks, The Nyeri Museum which houses cultural artifacts and Kenya’s colonial history. There are other private wildlife sanctuaries like Solio Ranch, Pejeta Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy close by.
