Namunyak Conservancy Accomodation

Location: Matthews Mountain Range, Laikipia County, Kenya

Area: 850,000 acre

Overview

Namunyak Wildlife conservancy, is a place of peace, and means “blessed” in the Samburu language, acquired from the aerial view of this rangeland. This conservancy began as two group ranches driven by the need to protect the Mathews range, and over 15 years later has expanded to include the four neighbouring group ranches surrounding the Mathew Forest.

Namely Sarara, Sapache, Ngilai West, Ngare Narok, and Ndonyo Wuasin group ranches now make up the 394,000hectare Namunyak Conservancy. Being one of the first community conservancies in northern Kenya to be established, along with II Ngwesi. At the foot of the Mathews Mountains, one of the world’s successful community conservation movement have come to life.

The Namunyak Conservancy was established in 1995, following two decades of unprecedented poaching, to promote wildlife conservation, and to assist the Samburu Community to benefit from tourism, in return for protecting the wildlife species living on their land.

Today, the Namunyak Wildlife conservancy is a treasure trove of rare and often uncatalogued species, home to the rare and beautiful De Brazza Colobus Monkey, and the IUCN red-listed sub-species of the Cycad, Encephalartos tegulaneus.

Also serves as a critical wildlife refuge for many species, including the northern populations of 450 Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, Leopard, African Wild Dog, Impala, Lion, Greater Kudu, and over 200 bird species. An important conservancy for the second largest population of elephants in Kenya, as they move seasonally from Mathews Range to Mount Kenya and Ngare Ndare Forest, a route they have used for decades.

In 1997, Sarara Camp opened to its first guests. This community-run camp within the conservancy is poignantly built on the site of an Elephant massacre in 1989, which brought in more money and jobs for the community than illegal bush meat and alike.
