Mombasa City
Mombasa city was the first capital of British East Africa, before Nairobi was elevated to capital status in 1907. The city is chief port of Kenya, situated on a coralline island in a bay of the Indian Ocean. The mainland municipal territory is approx. 100sq m by causeway, bridge, and ferry covering an area of 5.5 sq m. Mombasa’s history is traced from the writings of the 16th century, many traders attempted to enforce their governance on the town due to its advantageous location, and Arab influence is still predominantly felt.
Economically, its 2nd after Nairobi, formerly one of the districts, after 2013, it was reconstituted as a county on same boundaries. This is the smallest county in Kenya, the county borders Kilifi County to the north, Kwale County to the south west and the Indian Ocean to the east. Administratively, the county is divided into 7 divisions, 8 locations and 30 sub-locations.
Mombasa has 2 ports, Mombasa Old Port on the island’s east side and Kilindini Harbour on the west.
