Overview:
Meru County is home to the Bantu ethnic group that inhabit the Meru region of Kenya, a region on fertile lands of the norther and eastern slopes of Mount Kenya former Eastern Province. It borders Isiolo County to the north, Tharaka Nithi County to the East, Nyeri County to the southwest and Laikipia County to the west. Out of total area, park of it 973.3 km2 is gazetted as forest. The population here as per last census is 1.55 million people.
With tourism fairly developed in this county, the main attraction being Meru National Park, the Lewa Downs ranch is privately owned attracts tourists and competitive sports like the Lewa Safari Marathon, Rhino Charge and cross country. Mount Kenya is also in the county, and the cultural heritage amongst the Meu community is also a tourist attraction with a visit to the traditional worship places by the “Nchuri Ncheke” elders.
The county’s conservation areas are home to a variety of wildlife including white elephant, baboons, giraffe, gazelle, buffalos, rhino, cheetah, zebras and a number of bird species, over 300 recorded in Meru National Park, 130 species in Mount Kenya National Park, and Imenti Forest. Meru National Park is adjacent to Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves and Kora national Park to its south in a protected area at about 4000 km2.
Meru sits intact in a wilderness less visited, remote, rugged and prominently unspoilt, yet surrounded by undiluted natural beauty. Meru Town is situated about 8 km north of the equator, and bisected by 13 rivers and numerous mountain-fed streams. Tourist class hotels are mostly located within tourist attraction sites, like parks, conservancies, most are privately owned.
