Overview:
Kilifi County was formed in 2010 as a merger of Kilifi District and Malindi District, with its capital as Kilifi and the closest largest town as Malindi. A total of 5 counties makes up the Kenyan Coast. Kilifi County is located north and northeast of Mombasa, a 45.2 mi drive. The main inhabitants in the County are Mijikenda, Swahili, Bajuni, Indians, Arabs, and European settlers.
Tourism and fishing in Kilifi County are the major economic activities due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean, the major attractions being the ruins of Gedi dating between 11th and 17th century, Watamu Marine National Park, The Malindi Museum, the Rabai Museum, Matungu Beach, and the Kaya Forest. Also, the Mnarani ruins are the remains of two mosques near Mnarani in Kilifi County, dating from the 15th century, and the settlement at the site dates back to the 14th century.
