Jongomero Camp

Location: Ruaha National Park

Overview

Ruaha National Park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, and one of the largest National Parks in Africa also inhabited by large herds of buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, hippos, crocodiles, lions and leopards. The rare antelopes like sable, roan, dik dik, greater and lesser kudus, Grants gazelle and honey badgers may be seen and has one of the largest populations of wild dog after Nyerere National Park.

Ruaha also holds a special significance as it covers a unique transition zone where the eastern and Southern biomes intersect offering and extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds, with over 570 species of birds, half of all Tanzanian birds may be glimpsed in this park, making it one of the continent’s premier birding destinations.

Under the magnificent shade trees, on the banks of the seasonal Jongomero River lies the beautiful Jongomero camp. A hidden gem, tucked away in a remote corner of the Ruaha National Park gives you a chance to experience Africa’s best kept secret.

Positioned on one of the meanders, with sweeping views of the bank beyond, lies the camp bar, lounge, and restaurant; which comprises an open wooden terrace shaded by a high thatched roof with comfortable sofas and furniture made of reclaimed dhow wood.

The nearest camp is 40kms away from Jongomero, placing it in a secluded location from the well-worn safari trail. Making all the activities here in solitude, offering an intimate closeness to nature and exclusive game viewing experiences.

The park is known for the rapids of the Great Ruaha River and its rugged landscape of undulating hills, rocky outcrops, and a horizon studded with the imposing silhouettes of the iconic baobab, a true definition of ‘Wild Africa’.

The eight large and well-appointed tented suites are built on raised wooden platforms, under enormous thatched roofs that encompass a spacious private deck overlooking the dry riverbed. As the camp is unfenced, children over the age of 6 years are welcome, whilst children from 10 years and above for resident bookings are welcome, however all children are the responsibility of their parents or guardians at all times.

The ultimate remote off-the beaten-track safari experience, where you have inviting spots to relax with a book, socialize with the camp managers and fellow guests around the bar with an ice-cold drink in hand.  Opt to laze around the pool on warm days, as you enjoy the sights and sounds of being close to nature.

The Camp is accessible by air on scheduled (Coastal Aviation, Auric, and Safari Airlink) from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Seronera, Zanzibar, Nyerere and Mafia Island to Jongomero Airstrip, a 5 min drive to the camp, or by road through the Ruaha Main entrance gate. However, the camp does not take bookings with private vehicles and driver/guides, unless they use the camp’s guides on game drives, then the private driver can be accommodated in the guide tents.
